Construction all over this trip. I 275 under rebuild from I 94 to I 96 in western Detroit suburbs. US 23 freeway from I 75 to MI 13 closed for rebuild. MI 37 closed north of Sparta. Ramp from US 12/20 to I 65 closed in Gary. I 65/70 closed in downtown Indianapolis. KY 8 closed at KY 1566.

This was our first trip of US 35 in West Virginia after the last divided four-lane section was built. This bypasses the old by the drag strip on WV 617. The drag strip used to be the halfway point between Chapel Hill and Detroit.

Notes

US 60 through the Salt River canyon is one of the great roads. We stopped at the rest area at the US 60 bridge, walked the old bridge and photographed the canyon and the new bridge.

Historic US 80 is signed on US 60 just west of AZ 89 (historic US 80). It is interesting that there is a Historic sign for US 80, but not for US 70, which also ran along this road.

Immersive Van Gogh is magnificent.  Gogh see it. Accept no substitutes. 

The exhibition is in an old Ford factory, where they built Model A and Model T automobiles. Later, it was used for munition manufacture during the war. They repaved part of the factory floor with wooden bricks to prevent sparking if munitions fell on the war.

They are still working on the new ramp into Concord Mills. It seems to be taking forever.

Construction through Kannapolis is done, but there is bridge work happening between China Grove and Salisbury.

Mount Pleasant NC is a cute little town. On NC 73, there is a What-a-burger #13. There is a building named 73 & Main, at the corner of NC 73 and Main Street. East of town is Southern Grace Distilleries, which is in a former state prison.

We drove the new US 301 toll road in Delaware. Even though it is a little longer, it saves on tolls and stress level from any route through Baltimore. There are times to avoid the Bay Bridge, like on Labor Day, where the backup was 14 miles long, but otherwise it should be better that going through Baltimore.

I 66 has significant construction just east of Richmond and near Busch Gardens.

There are 26 tunnels on the Blue Ridge Parkway. On this trip, we drove through 18 of them: 10 between NC 191 and US 276 and eight between Asheville and Little Switzerland. Many years ago, we drove from Great Smokies National Park to US 19, which has five tunnels, and along the section of the Blue Ridge in Virginia that has a tunnel. This leaves me two tunnels on the parkway left.

Overmountain Victory Trail Monument

At the Parkway Visitors center at the NC Museum of Minerals, I discovered a new (to me) category of NPS recognized places: the National Historic Trails. The Overmountain Victory Trail passes through the Blue Ridge there, on its way from Virginia to Kings Mountain, South Carolina.
